Chapter 13

Roberta is the first to arrive at April’s apartment, naturally. Most in the Monthly Murder Movie Club think it’s because she’s afraid people will talk about her behind her back if she comes later. She’s not wrong. She thrusts a package of Little Debbie pumpkins into April’s hands before walking into the kitchen as if she’s been here before.

“Hello, Roberta,” says April. She wants to ask Roberta to take off her shoes. It is the polite thing to do when you’re a guest in someone’s home, but she doesn’t want a battle. Plus, Giana’s not crawling yet, so she’ll just run a vacuum through the room after everyone has gone home.

“That plant needs more water, or it will die.”

“Thanks. It’s new.”

“You have the budget to buy plants with a young child?” asks Roberta with an accusatory tone in her voice.

“It’s just a plant.”

“I suppose.”

A knock at the door ends the awkward conversation between the two women that have little in common other than their love for murder mysteries, the ones on the screen—and now—the one in reality.

Rishard and Yoly arrive together, though only by accident. Yoly has no interest in renewing a love affair in her life. With the passing of Larry and the kick-out-the-door of Vinnie, she’s quite content to spend her days alone. Alone with Larry. In his urn, that is. Plus, Rishard’s already in his 60s and too set in his ways. He wouldn’t mind a chance, though.

“April, your place is darling!” says Yoly, giving April a quick hug as she takes a charcuterie board full of sliced sausage and cheese into the kitchen. She sets the perfectly organized board next to Roberta’s cardboard box of individually wrapped pumpkins and can’t stop herself from feeling superior.

Rishard, dressed in a Hawaiian shirt with pineapples today, sheds his Crocs like a proper guest next to the door. He’d had the good sense to wear socks. He hands April a bottle of wine. “I thought we might need something to drink with all these snacks. Plus, I don’t cook much.”

“You could have fooled me,” says Roberta, looking pointedly at Rishard’s stomach. She can’t help herself sometimes.

“Play nice, kids,” says Yoly. “We need to act as a team tonight. There is much to share and pick apart.”

“Have I got some gossip for you!” Vicki says after letting herself into April’s apartment. Today she’s wearing one of her wigs, something she likes to do to keep things interesting, she’s said many times over. It’s a red curly wig which looks very reminiscent of orphan Annie, but somehow it suits her skin tone. She hands a bowl to April. “Spinach dip,” she says. “I forgot the bag of tortilla chips. I assume you have something suitable to use as a replacement?”

“Uh, sure.” April takes the spinach dip and places it on the counter next to the cookies she’d purchased at the bakery. While everyone is oohing and aahing over Giana in her baby swing, April goes through her sparse cabinets until finding what she’s been looking for, a box of Ritz crackers with one remaining sleeve.
